Chan is a pastor’s kid from Korea. He grew up serving in the church, but didn’t really understand what compelled other people to care until he became a young adult serving in the Korean army. He was moved to tears at the worship service he attended for the first time in the army, it was only then that he realized the real presence of God who has been with him throughout his life. Chan received a bachelor’s degree in business and studied at the Methodist Theological University in Korea and came to the US in 2012 to attend Garrett Theological Seminary. He has served in campus ministry, children’s ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and as a pastor at Chana UMC and Lighthouse United Methodist Church, and Urban Village Church as a site pastor of the Edgewater site. For 8 years of ministry at the local churches, Pastor Chan has learned various languages; the language of antiracism, the language of inclusivity, and the language of justice. These new languages shaped him as an anti-racist, a justice-seeker, and a peace-maker. His wife, Viang, is a talented artist (www.vianghong.com) and Chan’s biggest supporter. He and Viang love to watch movies and sports games, especially Premier League as the big fans of Sonny! Chan is also a Bulls fan, and his favorite musicians are Gregory Porter, and of course, BTS!
